Individual Counseling

July 26 2015

Individual counseling is one-on-one psychotherapy designed to help people with a mental disorder understand the cause of their illness and how to modify them so as to regain control of their life.  Most of these are caused by dramatic life experiences such as a major illness, bereavement, job loss or a break-up / divorce.  One-on-One therapy teaches individuals coping techniques and problem-solving skills. Individual counseling can be used to treat various forms of mental disorders:

There are various methods of individual counseling, some of which are listed below:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This type of therapy focuses on the thought process of an individual. Activities used will help the client identify and change problematic behavior through assignments, homework and behavior modification.

Solution Focused/Brief Therapy

This type of therapy focuses on what clients want to achieve through therapy, rather than on the problem that made them seek help. The approach does not focus on the past, but instead focuses on the present and future.ds

Anger Management Therapy

This type of therapy helps you unlearn negative responses to anger and help you regain control. An anger management counseling can help to recognize early signs of anger, and teach the necessary steps to relax and deal with situations in a positive way. Through awareness training and behavior modification techniques, a highly angry person can begin to see results, moving closer to mid-range anger, in 8 – 10 weeks.

Motivational Interviewing Therapy

This is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. Compared with nondirective counselling, it is more focused and goal-directed.
